Dr. Jane Edmond is Professor and Wong Family Distinguised University Chair, Department of Ophthalmology, Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin and Director of the Mitchel and Shannon Wong Eye Institute.

She is also an Adjunct Professor, Department of Ophthalmology, Baylor College of Medicine (BCM), Houston, TX.

Dr. Edmond’s alma mater is The University of Texas at Austin, graduating Summa Cum Laude, Special Honors in Zoology and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa in 1981.  She received her medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) and was inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society in 1985. She completed her residency in Ophthalmology at the Department of Ophthalmology, BCM, in 1989.  She completed two fellowships: Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics, 1990, and Neuro-Ophthalmology, BCM, 2006.

From 1991 to 1997 she served as faculty at BCM and Texas Children’s Hospital.  From 1997 to 2003 she served as faculty at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Scheie Eye Institute, and Wills Eye Hospital, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  In 2003 she returned to Houston, BCM and Texas Children’s Hospital, and was promoted to Professor in 2016. In January, 2018, Dr. Edmond became the Founding Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology at Dell Medical School.  Since that time Dr. Edmond has oeverseen the construction of two ophthalmology clinics, hired staff and 4 faculty, and obtained approval from the ACGME for a new ophthalmology residency, with the first class beginning their intern year in 2022. 

Dr. Edmond’s clinical and academic focus has been pediatric neuro-ophthalmology, the ophthalmic impact of craniosynostosis and pediatric brain tumors, and complex strabisusm in adults and children. She has serves as an author on over 50 peer-reviewed publications, 12 book chapters, and has delivered 62 national lectures, 15 international lectures, and 15 keynote /visiting professor presentations.

Dr. Edmond has been involved in graduate medical education.  To date, she has trained over 200 residents from the ophthalmology departments of BCM, Wills Eye Hospital and Scheie Eye Institute, and trained 49 pediatric and neuro-ophthalmology fellows.

Dr. Edmond has served in many leadership roles within AAPOS and AAO. 
Dr. Edmond served as President of AAPOS from 2019-2020. Her previous leadership roles include Director at Large, AAPOS Board of Directors, AAPOS Councilor to the AAO, and member of the editorial board, Journal of AAPOS. She is the recipient of the AAPOS Senior Achievement Award. 

She served as a Trustee at Large, AAO Board of Trustees, as well as Chair of following AAO committees: Lifelong Education for the Ophthalmologist (LEO)/MOCEC Committee, Awards Committee, Membership Advisory Committee, and Director of AAO Subspecialty Day in Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, and faculty for the Basic and Clinical Science Course, Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, Volume 6.  She is the recipient of the AAO Senior Honor Award.

In 2022, Dr. Edmond was nominated to serve as President of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (elections results announced November 1, 2022).

Ineligible companies are companies whose primary business is producing, marketing, selling, re-selling, or distributing healthcare products used by or on patients. Financial relationships are relevant if the educational content an individual can control is related to the business lines or products of the ineligible company. The CME activity staff at Wills Eye Hospital report no financial relationships with ineligible companies.
