Overview

The 3rd Annual Peter & Ruth Laibson Endowed Cornea Lecture was delivered by Jayne S. Weiss, MD of LSU.

The conference begins with live patient examinations featuring patients with common and unusual corneal dystrophies and degenerations. Some patients will have been treated with laser or corneal transplant surgery including patients with recurrences of their conditions after surgery. We will then proceed with 3rd annual Laibson Endowed Cornea Lecture by invited speaker Dr. Jayne Weiss. We will conclude with presentations on corneal dystrophies and degeneration and congenital opacities, including talks on genetics and pathology.

With the emergence of new technologies, treatments, and clinical trial results, ophthalmologists need to understand how to incorporate these advances into clinical care. We will discuss latest advances in the management of inherited and acquired ophthalmic diseases and evidence for emerging therapies and screening modalities. Both didactic and case-based educational formats will be utilized to illustrate current trends in the management of complex and routine ophthalmic patients, taking into account diagnostics as well as nonsurgical and surgical treatment.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Identify unusual corneal dystrophies, degenerations, and congenital corneal opacities.
  2. Understand the genetics of corneal dystrophies.
  3. Incorporate genetic analysis and consultation into patient treatment.
  4. Compare currently available treatment options for specific corneal dystrophies, degenerations and congenital corneal opacities.
