In this series, we welcome influential ophthalmologists from around the country and the world to speak at Wills Eye Hospital for the benefit of residents and practicing ophthalmologists. Presentations and lectures include clinical and non-clinical content, and reflections on each guest's professional journey.

Dr. Shameema Sikder, L. Douglas Lee and Barbara Levinson-Lee Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at the Wilmer Eye Institute, Johns Hopkins University, specializes in corneal disorders and complex cataracts. She was the founding Medical Director of the Wilmer-Bethesda clinic, where she maintains a busy surgical practice.

Dr. Sikder is also the founding Director of the Johns Hopkins Center of Excellence for Ophthalmic Surgical Education and Training. With a faculty role at the Johns Hopkins Malone Center for Engineering in Healthcare, she is committed to advancing surgical training. Dr. Sikder conducts innovative research funded by NIH and Microsoft, focusing on novel Artificial Intelligence technologies for assessing surgical skill.

Dr. Sikder earned her double B.S. in Chemical Engineering and Biochemistry and M.D. from the University of Arizona, completed an ophthalmology residency at the Wilmer Eye Institute and a fellowship in cornea and refractive disease at the Moran Eye Institute, where she was awarded the national Claes Dohlman Fellow of the Year. She returned to Wilmer in 2011, serving as the third female Assistant Chief of Service since 1925.

Dr. Sikder enjoys spending time in the Washington DC area with her husband and boy-girl twins.

Mitigation of Relevant Financial Relationships

In compliance with the Standards for Integrity and Independence in Accredited Continuing Education set by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), it is the policy of Wills Eye Hospital that the information presented at CME activities will be commercially unbiased and based upon clinical and scientific evidence. To help participants make judgments about the presence of commercial bias, Wills Eye Hospital provides information that all individuals in a position to control the content of a CME activity (including faculty, planners, reviewers or others) have disclosed about all financial relationships they have with ineligible companies. All relevant financial relationships have been mitigated.

Ineligible companies are companies whose primary business is producing, marketing, selling, re-selling, or distributing healthcare products used by or on patients. Financial relationships are relevant if the educational content an individual can control is related to the business lines or products of the ineligible company. The CME activity staff at Wills Eye Hospital report no financial relationships with ineligible companies.
