In this series, we welcome influential ophthalmologists from around the country and the world to speak at Wills Eye Hospital for the benefit of residents and practicing ophthalmologists. Presentations and lectures include clinical and non-clinical content, and reflections on each guest's professional journey.

This series is not certified for CME credit.

Nicholas J. Volpe, MD is the George and Edwina Tarry Professor and Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine. He attended SUNY Brooklyn for medical school and completed residency, fellowship and Chief Residency at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Harvard Medical School. Prior to relocating to Northwestern, he was Professor of Ophthalmology and Neurology at the Scheie Eye Institute, University of Pennsylvania.

He has published more than 140 scientific publications (optic nerve disease, pupillometry, adult strabismus surgery, graduate medical education) and numerous book chapters. The third edition of his textbook, Neuro-ophthalmology: Diagnosis and Management, is the definitive single volume text in the field of neuro-ophthalmology. He has played a prominent role nationally in improving the standards of ophthalmology resident education and in neuro-ophthalmology.

Awards throughout his career for both his clinical work and resident education have recognized his contributions and achievements. These include the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), the Straatsma Award for excellence in resident education from the AAO and the Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology and the Robert Dunning Dripps Memorial award for excellence in graduate medical education from the University of Pennsylvania. At Northwestern he has successfully lead the Department to be one of the nation’s premier, research intensive and education focused Departments while providing the highest quality eye care and surgery in the region. His own clinical interests are in neuro-ophthalmic disorders particularly optic nerve disease and adult strabismus surgery.
Research interests include new diagnostic technologies, including pupillometry and visible light optical coherence tomography, imaging abnormalities in neurodegenerative diseases, surgical education of ophthalmology residents, adult strabismus surgery and clinical trials for optic nerve disease.

He is a member of the American Ophthalmological Society, a Director of the Heed Foundation, a member of the Board of the Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology and on the Board of the Northwestern Medical Group, the Illinois Society for Prevention of Blindness, and the Chicago Ophthalmology Society. He has served on the Board of the North American Neuro-ophthalmology Society, several AAO committees and the AUPO Fellowship Compliance Committee and currently co-leads the AUPO Leadership Development Program. He continues to lead the transformation of the Department of Ophthalmology at Northwestern Medicine to be a leader in the fight to research, diagnose, treat and cure blinding eye disease.
